The major accidents in the nuclear power industry, including those at TMI-2 and Chernobyl, have demonstrated the importance of accident management. As a result, implementation of an accident management program is recognized as one of the most essential elements for closure of the severe-accident issue that has been raised in the aftermath of the nuclear disasters. Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has developed a phased approach to establishing an integrated framework for severe accident management at each nuclear power plant of Korea, both in operation and under construction or design. This paper presents a synopsis of the phased approach, along with our fundamental policy and implementation plan.
