We investigated the relationship between the interannual variability of the SST and the turbulent heat flux in the Indian Ocean by the satellite observa-tions ranging from July 1987 to December 1994, fo-cusing on the teleconnective effect of the change of the mid latitude atmosphere. We found the air-sea thermal coupling is depressed in the low latitude because the thermal coupling is depressed in the low latitude because the thermal effects of the interannual variation of the SST and the wind offset each other, whereas the thermal interaction between the sea and the air is close in the souther mid latitude. Due to the low air-sea thermal interaction, the humidity anomaly in the southern hemisphere is transferred to the northen hemisphere without being affected by the thermal structure of the ocean in the low latitude during the south-west monsoon.
