Experimetnal measurements of temperature by CARS, of Oh and CH concentrations by LIFS, of NO and NO_2 by chemiluminescence and of stable species by gas chromatography were carried out on a burner which generates binary partially premixed rich methane-air flames. The results indicated that a large part of the NO was produced through the Fenimore prompt-route and that a considerable amount must have reconverted within the flame. A modelling study was conducted using the opposed flow flame code applied to rich methane-air mixtures on the fuel stream and air on the oxidiser stream. Analyses of the role of strain rate on the various mechanisms of NO formation and of the contributions of each reconversion reaction in these flames were carried out and compared with those of the diffusion flame.
