To achieve the dimensional tolerances required in ultraprecision machining, very small depths of cut are often used in the final machining steps. It has been shown [1] that for normal ultraprecision machining conditions the effective depth of cut that produces the surfaces is less than 25 nm. At this depth of cut, ploughing of hte material becomes the dominant mechanism in producing the part's surface. In multiple point machining techniques, such polishing and grinding, ploughing is a significant mechanism in producing the final part's surface.
