A real-time dynamic process of the morphology change of solid Al_2O_3 inclusion particles and clusters when CaO particles are added as the inclusion morphology modifier has been successfully observed in-situ on steel melt surface by using a newly developed Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope (CSLM). A brief introduction to the CSLM and its application to observe the modification of inclusion particles and clusters is given. The in-situ observed characteristics of the morphology change of Al_2O_3inclusions on molten steel surface are described in detail, followed by discussions focused on the application of the observed results to the refining of steel melt.
