Using a two-roller testing machine,the authors examined the effects of surface roughness and work-harkenign on the occurrence of rolling ocntact fatigue or surface distress of austenitic stainless steel (SUS304) rollers under rolling with sliding conditions.In the present experiments,pitting occurred only on hte slower (driven) side roller,but there was a significant difference in the pitting life depending on the roughness combination of two rollers.In the nearly equal roughness combination,the pitting life became short as the combined surface roughness increased.
