Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a widely used explosive that has been classified as hazardous by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because it causes liver damage and anemia, and is a mutagen by the Ames test. TNT manufacture, use, and past disposal practices have resulted in extensive contamination of soils, sediments, surface waters and groundwater, estimates suggest the U.S. Army alone has over a million cubic yards of TNT contaminated soil at 28 army sites, and as much as 5x10~5 gallons of wastewater may be generated by a single munitons plant per day.
