In the Single Electrode DC furnace the current must be conducted through the furnace bottom. The same applies for a multiple electrode DC furnace since otherwise the arcs would be pushed towards the furnace side wall refractory resulting in the same "hot spot" phenomena as for the AC furnace. A number of different bottom anode concepts have been developed during the years all with different characteristics with respect to operational and maintenance practice. In DANIELI, the water cooled anode concept was selected in order to allow for the use of the same type of bottom refractory as for AC furnaces and to have the possibility to continuously monitor the anode condition.
