Red Smelt-An attractive solution for the production of hot metal, a scrap substitute chargeable as liquid metal or solid pigs

REDSMELT is the latest and most economical development for producting hot metal or pig iron as scrap substitutes from virgin iron units. The advantages of hot metal as a charge material for the elctric arc furnace are demonstrated. The two major production units of a REDSMELT plant, the rotary reduction furnace (RRF) and the submerged arc furnace (SAF), are presented and discussed and the combination of the two are introduced as the REDSMELT process. Special features of the REDSMELT process are then developed and explained. Ultimately, economic considerations are given and figures from a Pre-Feasibility Study are disclosed. In conclusion it is stated that the REDSMELT process is an attractive solution with regard to producing hot metal or pig iron as a valuable virgin-iron based scrap substitute.
