Current conducting electrode arms are essential components of electric are furnaces. In 1988 the Badische Stahlwerke (BSW) in Kehl have installed a new generation of arms, made of aluminum. The main advantage of the aluminum electrode arms is the increase of active power input due to both, reduced weight and lower reactance. Today this technology is well established, for AC as well as for DC arc furnaces. This paper describes general aspects for the design of current conducting arms and gives examples of operating results.
