The importance of slag engineering for optimizing primary and secondary steelmaking processes has progressed over the years to the point of slag custormization. These "designer" slags. whether added as a singular material, or resulting from "conditioning" existing slags, or formed in combination with the products of oxygen refining, all have a common denominator. They are not static chemical systems independent of the metal they cover nor the refractory lined vessels in which they are contained. A constant flux of material is exchanged between the slag and the metal systems. An action taken to achieve a result in the metal can be quantified by observing its influence in the slag.
