Electromagnetic stirrer design and operating parameters have diverse effects on stirring intensity in the casting mold. Those effects are asssessed within the context of stirring intensity control in the meniscus region and the rest of the mold. The suitability and limitations of single-and dual-coil stirring systems to perform that task are compared. The comparison, which includes the metallurgical and operating results obtained with the dual-coil M-EMS, demonstrates that the system provides the most flexible and effective control of stirring in the mold including the meniscus.
