A modeling campaign was conducted to determine the preferred operatin parameters for a newly commissioned super sonic water cooled oxygen lance at Sydney Steel Mill (SSM). Two models were developed in parallel. The first being a 1/3 scale water model. This was used to study the effect of lance vertical and horizontal angle and gas flow rate on: the isothermal flow of water due to the impinging gas jet; and splash generation due to the impinging gas jet.
