Implementing daylighting and energy-efficiency in government buildings:a case study and analysis of the tucson main library and the phoenix central library

Government energy policies are beginning to reflect growing concerns regarding energy consumption.By utilizing existing technology and climatic design principles,buildings can be energy-efficient,with little or no increase in initial cost.Through a case study of two Arizona public libraries,the effectiveness and potential of various energy strategies was investigated.Analysis based on site data and computer simulation tools,CalPas3 and Superlite,shows that simple,reliable strategies such as fixed window shading,spectrally selective,Low-E glazing and south-facing window monitors can increase thermal and/or visual comfort without significant increase in initial or operational costs.
