REVISION TO THE ISO 1996 SERIES-DESCRIPTION, MEASUREMENT AND ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE

The original 1971 version of ISO 1996, Acoustics - Description and measurement of environmental noise, used A-weighted sound level as a primary descriptor, but it contained a 5-dB penalty for impulsive sounds and a penalty for noises containing pure tones. These penalties or adjustments were, in effect, used to form a noise rating, where the noise rating is the measured level plus the penalty. During the early and mid 1980's, a major revision of ISO 1996 was undertaken, and a Standard with three parts was developed.
