By measuring the effective runout of the paper rolls as they were unwound in the Unwind Stand of the Rewinder, using the LVDT's we were able then to reproduce the shape or profile of the paper roll at a number of stations throughout its diameter.By using time domain averaging it was possible to effectively remove the random variations in the roll profile from the measurement procedure. The effective imbalance could be found by calculating the geometric mass centre from the roll profiles, measuring the difference in urn of this position from the effective rotational centre for the roll, and calculating the imbalance grade from ISO 1940 Standard from the data measured. The single back to back test showed that the method was valid as the variations in the roll structure were transferred as expected through the roll by the paper reversal.
