Gas Research Institute (GRI) has been investigating imporved mehtods for gas transmission and distribution system leak survey based on the infrared (IR) spectral absorption of naturla gas.IR laser-based remote sensing technologies are potentially capble of rapidly scanning large areas in search of gas leakage plumes as they emerge from the ground.For the leak survey of gas mains and services,a remote sensing system mounted on top of a vehicle could survey the gas distribution system quickly.This paper presents the results of the Backscatter Absorption Gas Imaging (BAGI) technology adapted to work with a solid-state continuous wave (CW) laser.the system was tested in the cont4rolled leak and field environments.the ground levle concentraitons as low as 500 ppm were detected even with the initial system.Several areas for the system imporvement were identified.In addition,the results assisted in focusing a new project to remotely detect rather than image gas leakage plumes was developed.
