Effect of volatile organic compounds in-and outdoors on allergies

Major factors able to influence allergies are airborne exposures. Eczema infantum was seected as one healith effect as it may be regarded as an early manifestation of atopy. Considering the time spend indoors by young children, the influence of indoor pollutants on allergies cannot be ruled out. Comparing measured outhdoor and indoor pollutant concentration levels, the data show that the latter are 10-fold higher indoors. Therefore, the dosage taken in and, thus, the effect of outdoor exposure can be expected to be less than the one from indoors. This risk from indoor air pollution exposure is further increased by the increased length of time new-borns, infants, young children spend indoors. These data suggest that preventive measures are advisable for these children.
