Underwater video and still images provide immediate qualitative descriptions of in situ epibenthic communities. However, statistical analysis of visual data is required in order to quantiatively assess the sensitivity of epifauna to anthroupgenic influences. This paper presents a cases study in the use of such techniques as a tool in the management of a marine nature reserve; Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. Horse mussels, Modiolus modiolus beds in the Lough form complex structures with numerous interstices, harbouring a diverse assemblage of associated fauna.
