Acoustic mapping on Shellfish Habitals

The RoxAnn hydro-acoustic processing system is increasingly being used as part of the standard on-board equipment for seiners, trawlers and dredgers. The system enables fishermen not only to locate the types of ground where they are likely to find their target species but also to detect aggregations of shellfish and finfish. This results in a more focused fishing effort which should improve catch per unit effort and also reduce the environmental impact of fishing. With non-quota species however, there is a risk that over-exploitation will take place through more efficient fishing and by better detection of new fishing grounds.
