The requirement for Pipeline and Utility Companies to manage their "right of ways" and assets has become a more difficult and expensive task as companies expand their systems. They require more up to date accrate information about the condition and location of their pipeline or utility grid system. Paper and hard copy systems developed 50 years ago have stood the test of time but have been very expensive to update and mantain. A current evaluation of maps systems typically shows out dated maps, aerial photo of many years old. Existing methods of survey mapping that used Digital Ortho-Photography worked well for hard copy systems are not as economical when being used to populate new GIS systems. This method of aerial-photo survey is the highest level of spatial resoluation and precision positioning but is also the most expensive and time consuming. We have addressed the task fo acquiring the new data sets and imagery using fully integrated digital imaging sensors coupled with LIDAR technology at lower flight altitudes. The methods used to collect and porcess the data is done in a way to allow an automated processing routine to occur to fully produce ortho-rectified imagery sets that are multi-layered, ready for work in any GIS system.
