ENVALDAT is a Concerted Action funded by the European Commission, DGXII (Contract Number: ENV4-CT96-0363). The project investigates the methodologiees currently in palce for the valuation of environmental data, including Earth observation data, with the objective of providing end-users with accessible tools for establishing the value of data in financial terms. The ENVALDAT project is focussing on these issues in relation to data for use in coastal zone management, with a multi-disciplinary project team, bringing together economists, remote sensing scientists and coastal engineers. Despite many difficulties, general and specialist Earth observation and environmental data and information products are rregularly traded. It is on the basis of this experience that ENVALDAT sougth to build. Valuation methodologies, whether formal or informal, are already being employed. It was the objective of ENVALDAT to consolidate and evaluate this experience, and from this derive gudielines on data valuation for wider circulation and use.
