Abstract: This paper describes the application of the well-knownscanning laser interferometric technique to thevibration measurement of small objects. The techniquehas been optimized to measure small biologicalspecimens, in which sizes can range from 100 $mu@m to10 mm, but proves to be also suitable for vibrationalstudies on micromechanical systems. In the field ofsensory physiology, it is here applied to theinvestigation of the biomechanical properties of smalltympanal systems. Some results are briefly presented.!9
