Annex 10 of the IEA Hydrogen Programme is entitled Pphotoproduction of Hydrogen" It was started 1 March 1995 and terminates 1 October 1998,, after a six months extension of the originally planned three year period. Its objective is to investigate and develop processes for production of hydrogen by direct conversion of solar light. There are several posilbe approaches to direct solar;/hydrogen conversion. The process categories known as photoelectrochemical and photobiological hydrogen production are considered as the most promising, and were selected for study and development under Subtask A and Subtask B, respectively. A thrid Subtask was concerned with the standardisation of methods for measuring the reporting the efficiencies of solar/hydrogen conversion. After a general presentation of the background, the task-sharing work initiated and some of the results obtained will be described. Some considerations on future international collaboration in this area will also be given.
