Modern communication systems demand high reliability time standards. To enable a smooth handoff from one base station to another, each base station must share the same time reference. Current base station needs are met by either quartz or rubidium oscillators tied to an external reference, usually the Navstar GPS satellite system. The choice of an oscillator is highly dependent on the environmental conditions expected.
