High Energy, High Cycle Life, Low Pressure Metal-Hydrogen Batteries

Metal-hydrogen systems combine a battery positive electrode with a fuel cell hydrogen electrode. The battery electrode is commonly a nickel hydroxide electrode similar to those used in nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. It also can be a silver oxide electrode similar to those used in silver-zinc and silver-cadmium batteries. The nickel based battery offers excellent cycle life and very good current rate capabilities while the silver based system possesses specific energy in the order of 90 to 110 Wh/kg and has demonstrated cycle life of well over 1000 cycles [1]. Both of these systems require a pressure vessel for containing the high hydrogen pressure. Ergenics' Hy-Stor~® low pressure system combines in a single unit the metal-hydrogen electrochemistry and a vessel containing hydride alloy for hydrogen gas storage [2]. The paper describes work conducted on a standard D size battery that can fit in mam-battery packs without major modifications.
