This paper discusses the examination of both single cells and a multiple cell 100-watt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack. For single cell experiments, the electrochemical performance of various Nafion membranes was evaluated measuring the current density versus potential. Nafion 105, 112, 115, and 117 membrane electrolytes were evaluated. Nafion 112 was the best performing membrane. It delivered >1 A/cm~2 at 0.72 V.For the 100 watt H_2-air 30-cell fuel cell stack, the electrochemical performance was evaluated at various load levels) and ambient temperatures. At room temperature, the PEM fuel cell stack delivered up to 80 W and 5 A at 21 V (0.70 V/cell).
