Abstract: To produce a parallel-projection image on a planar array of gamma-ray detectors, the standard procedure is to use a parallel-hole collimator. An alternative presented here to place a pinhole array in front of the detector and to synthesize parallel projections from the pinhole data. This eliminates the physical blurring and distance-dependent resolution effects of collimators, and replaces them with the mathematical problem of estimating projection integrals. We provide conditions under which this can reasonably be done and show some examples. !1
