Operation of turbines with fire resistant fluids, including the lubricating system

According to an internal VGB report, there have been 83 publicized cases worldide involving substantial fire damage to turbine generator sets between 1971 and 1997 [1]. Clearly, we must assume that the data in the report does not cover every incident that occurred during this period. These incidents involved ten deaths and a large number of injuries. Property damage in one case alone ammounted to US-dollar 41 million, while some incidents resulted in shutdowns lasting up to one year (Figure 1).
