Grace and McClintock suggested (EPRI 1990) that better equipment be developed to rotate turbine shafts, perform coupling alignment checks, and verify bearing alignment changes in order to reduce turbine outage duration. A new method of rotating rotors and aligning couplings during outages is now available. It has proven very effective in reducing the outage's critical path and eliminating overhead crane use. The new method combines AC inverted drives, patent pending turning pins, and coupling laser alignment equipment. Using the method, coupling alignment measurement time is reduced from 4-8 hours to 20 minutes.
