The Input/Loss Method is an unique process which allows for complete thermal understanding a power plant through explicit determinations of fuel and effluent flows, fuel chemistry, fuel heating value and unit heat rate. Direct measurements of fuel or effluent flows are not made. The method is designed for on-line monitoring. For coalfired units, fuel metering to the accuracy required for acceptable thermal performance monitorign has always eluded the power industry, to say nothing of variable coal heating values. Given intrinsic inaccuracies, traditional coal flow metering is considered worthless for thermal performance monitoring. The Input/Loss Method develoepd by Exergetic Systems employs turbine cycle energy flows, boiler efficiency independent of fuel flow, routine emissions and indicated Air/Fuel ratio. For typical situations, errors have been demonstrated at less than +-0.5percent. The Input/Loss Method is truly an integrated approach unifying thermal performance and emissions monitoring.
