Bromine-based biocides for cooling water systems

Electric utilities have applied and investigated bromine based biocides for over twenty years and numerous examples of these applications to cooling water systems have been published. Also, a large collection of technical literature existsrelating to the chemical, biological, and physical properties of bromine compounds and the advantages they offer. This paper reviews this literature regarding the types of bromine compounds used for cooling tower and other cooling water systems, thechemical and biocidal properties of bromine based biocides, interactions with other treatment chemicals and system materials, and control parameters and levels. Examples of feed systems for the more commonly used bromine compounds also are presented. This paper is restricted to bromine based biocides that release oxidizing forms of bromine compounds upon application to water. This compilation and review is presented to help broaden the understanding of the typical and proper application of bromine basedbiocides.
