Unit 4 of the Heyden power plant operated by PreussenElektra is the largest hard-coal-fired unit in Europe. Gross output has been increased from 82S MW in 1987 to 911 MW today by utilizing reserves and technical advances. In terms of its designand process engineering, the plant has nearly all the features of state-of-the-art power plant technology and therefore serves as a reference plant for future 900/1000-MW units This paper describes Unit 4 of the Heyden plant and its operating performance. The design of a new 1000-MW unit based on Heyden is then presented.
