A new Performance Test Code, PTC 47, is being developed to address the performance of fuel gasification, combustion turbine-based power plants (Bannister et al., 1997). The Code will apply to a variety of gasification processes, and to a range of liquid and solid fuels. In addition to addressing the "thermal" performance of the power plant, PTC 47 will provide procedures for measuring selected fuel gas "contaminants" to determing the fuel gas cleanup system performance - the subject of this paper. The fuel gas cleanup aspects of the Code address measurements made of the fuel gas gaseous, solid, and condensable contaminants. Stack gas measurements are not considered in this Code, such measurements being well established and described by existing codes. The fuel gas contaminants of interest are species specified by turbine vendors (e.g., particulate concentrations and sizes, alkali vapors, and several metals), and precursors to stack emissions for which there are control functions in the fuel gas cleanup section of the plant (e.g., particulate concentrations and sizes; reduced-sulfur species such as H_2S, COS; ammonia and hydrogen cyanide). lssues involved in making such measurements are: 1) the fuel gas generally is pressurized, ad sometimes at high-temperature, reguiring properly adapted gas sampling equipment; 2) most gas sampling procedures have been established for oxidizing conditions and significant modifications are needed to apply them to reducing gases; and 3) sampling accuracies are poor for some contaminant species in fuel gases and estimates of sampling accuracies are difficult. This paper reviews the incentives for generating this Code, discusses the fuel gas contaminant sampling techniques and their practical issues, and reports ont he overall status of PTC 47.
