Improving various strand qualities is an important theme in the continuos casting operation. In order to produce defect-free strands, the creation of a uniformly good (not nail-shaped) solidified steel shell at the meniscus region and the suppression of powder slag entrapment are necessary. Achieving this subjects depends on the control of molten steel stream, mold heat transfer rate and insulation at the meniscus region. We paid attention to these subjects, and carried out various investigations about the SEN (Submerged Entry Nozzle) shape and mold powder properties. As a result, newly developed mold powders and SEN contributed greatly to the improvement of strand qualities.
