This paper describes the development of a manufacturing route for marine components using electron beam welded fabrications. Studies on the welding of high strength low alloy steel has enabled the fabrication of simulated marine components and has lead to the manufacture of prototypes for service use. Studies have demonstrated the feasibility of electron beam weld fabrications in a high strength copper nickel alloy using cast and forged subassemblies, and simulated components produced. The freedoms in the design of these fabricated components have been restricted by the availability of sub assembly material, but the design concepts adopted and the electron beam welding techniques developed in these studies have confirmed the feasibility and viability of the electron beam welded fabrication route for marine components. Future potential of this technique is discussed.
