The True Confessions of a Closet ESH Engineer

On most projects, the system safety engineer's effort is directed towared preparing safety requirements, incorporating safety in the design, and product safety. But what do system safety engineers do when much of their work involves new operations to be conducted in an old facility? In this case, many of the most serious hazards concern the safety of the operations, rather than the safety of the project hardware. As we all know, system safety engineering covers all phases in the life of a system. So, the system safety engineer who discovers the major challenges to be related to the safety of facilities and operations finds that he or she must (sometimes reluctantly) become an environmental, safety, and health (ESH) professional. this paper describes some of the ESH lessons learned on one such project.
