Powdered activated carbon dosed in membrane ultrafiltration reactors is currently being used in several full scale drinking water applicatiosn to reduce the concentration of organic compounds in finished effluents.Optimization of the operating ocnditions of such adsorption systems can be very much facilitated by using mathematical models.In this study,an adsorptin model was used to evaluate the removal of organic compounds in the floc blanket reactor-powdered activated carbon - ultrafiltration system (FBR-PAC-UF).Model predictions for DOC removals in the FBR-PAC-UF system were verified with laboratory-scale experiments (0.6 L/min) using a groundwater containing 2.1 mg/L DOC.Good agreement was obtained between model predictions and experimental data for several carbon doses.Coagulation of DOC by aluminum salts and further adsorption on the recycled PAC in the FBR resulted in a substantial reduction of carbon usage rate.
