Addressing blue water concerns from a groundwater supply: the causes of blue water in new residential developments

In the past 18 months,the Scottsdale Water Department has received an increasing number of ocmplanints related to blue water at hte homeowners tap,and blue staining of porcelain and porcelain-like plumding fixtures.A substantial majority of these complaints have coem from a new residential development,Las Piedras Homes.One concern has been whether the water provided to this development is particularly corrosive,or whether plumbing materials or fabrication techniques are incompatible with the water quality.The other concern in whether the copper corrosion is a threat to public health or merely an aesthetic annoyance.Blue water can be an indication of several different corrosion phenomena,all of them related to the release of oxidized metal from copper tubing surfaces.In many instances,blue water is associated with uniform copper corrosion which results in the release of dissolved copper.However,particulate copper compounds can impart blue-green color to the water at very low concentrations.As is usually the case,blue water has a tendency to stain the plumbing fixtures with whcih it comes into contact.
