U.S.EPA efforts in the eastern europe water sector

The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),supported by funding from the U.S.Agency for International Development (AID),has been assisting countries in central and Eastern Europe,Russia,and Ukraine with making the difficult transition to more effective programs to protect and manage water quality and drinkign water supplies.the success of this effort is in no small way due to hte forging of partnerships between U.S. and European water professionals,including many members of the American Water Workds Association and volunteers from Water for People.It has been a great honor for the author to serve as the overall manager of EPA's water sector assistance program in Eastern Europe since 1991.Major accomplishments of this effort are presented in three categories: infrastructure planning and investimentinstitution-strengthening,and transfer of appropriate technology.
