The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized long ago that working to maintain low turbidity in a facility's effluent water is one of the best tools for maintaining a safe water supply.Turbidity is defined as "an expression of the optical property that causes light to be scattered and absorbed rather than transmitted with no change in direction of flux level through the sample." The definition of turbidity in the water and wastewater industry has become more specific than this general definition.Most of the turbidimeters on the market today measure light scattered by a water sample at an angle of 90 deg to the incident light and then converty that jlevel of light scattered to nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).The practice of measureing turbidity using ht elight scattered at 90 deg is commonly referred to as the nephelometric method.
