Dynamic centrifuge modeling was conducted to investigate seismically-induced lateral dynamic soil and water pressures in submerged liquefiable sandy soil against the landward face of a waterfront rigid wall. It was found that the water pressure is induced by deformation of the soil skeleton rather than by flow of the pore water in shaking; moreover, the effective soil pressure decreases with the increasing excess pore water pressure, becomes zero at complete liquefaction state. From theseexperimental findings and introducing a new concept of "submerged effective unit weight", a simple method was developed for evaluating the dynamic soil and water pressures on waterfront rigid walls under any lateral wall-soil deformation.
