In order to investigate the embedment effect on bearing capacity of shallow foundations on soft cohesive ground under eccentric and inclined loads, centrifuge loading tests were carried out. The conclusions drawn from the test results are: (1)Vertical bearing capacity increases in accordance with an increase in the depth-width ratio, showing embedment effects. The test results correspond well with calculated values obtained from the bearing capacity formula proposed by Peck et al. (2)Horizontal bearing capacity increases in accordance with an increase in the depth-width ratio. When the depth-width ratio is fixed, both horizontal bearing capacity and failure mode depend on the weight of the foundation. (3) Distribution of subgradereaction at the foundation base can be approximated by a trapezoidal distribution and/or triangular distribution if earth pressure on both sides of the foundation is taken into account.
