The use of CT scans to evaluate soil models

CT scans using X-rays were used to investigate deformation and failure pattern in soil mdoels from centrifuge tests. The deformation pattern around a cone affter cone penetratio ntests is shown. In another example the failure surface in front of a model tunnel is visualised in normally consolidated clay. The technique can be easily applied and proves to elucidate much of the patterns of soil deformation on a scale appropriate for geotechnical centrifuge tests.
