A series of loading tests and pressuremeter tests was carried out in a centrifuge to investigate load-settlement behavior of shallow circular footings on very loose and compressible sand deposits. Based on a punching shear failure mechanism observed in the loading tests, a simple method to predict load-settlement curves of footings resting on very loose sand was proposed. Resutls of triaxial tests and pressuremeter tests were utilized in the method. The method was validated by comparing observed performance with calculated resutls.
