The global changes in the regulatory environment together with the increasing influence of computer based communication are already changing our communication infrastructure today. Towards the end of the millennium, we will see a consolidation from dedicated, service specific networks towards multiservice broadband networks. In wide area carrier networks, ATM will be the dominating technology for the realization of these networks.
