The southern United States has always been a center for soft wood timber production due to its ideal climatic and soil water conditions for tree growth (Sabine, 1994). More than 1 million acre of the land in the coastal area is calssified as pine flatwoods (Cubbage and Flather, 1993), Important values of this ecosystem include timber production, wildife habitat, and groundwater recharge (Brandt and Ewel, 1991), As human population and wood demands continue to increase in the South. forestry cctivities on pine flatwoods have become more and more intensified (Riekerk and Korhnak, 1984). Environmental concerns abut forest management practices in the coastal areas include impact on water quality, hydrology (e.g. wetland hydroperieod) and resultant influences on wildife habitat and long term cumulative impacts on soil productivity. Although the effects of forest management on upland watershed hydrology are well studied in the past century (Bosh and Hevlett, 1982; Swank and Crossley, 1988), little informaiton is available for the low land and forested weland landscape (Shepard et al, 1993).
