Korea Telecom has been leading the development of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy)-based synchronous multiplexing and optical transmission equipments, and the result has produced 155/622/2,488 Mbps equipmetns, which are named as SMOT-1 / 4 / 16 (Synchronous Multiplexing and Optical Transmission system level - 1 / 4 / 16), and those SDH equipments have been widely deployed to carry huge amount of calls between telephone offices in Korea. Transmission equipments, by nature, are very stable, and require very little O&M(Operation and Management) jobs. In that reason, the SDH equipments developed in Korea have the minimal O&M function, which is to process inquiry and control commands from oerator's terminal serially connected to them. However, as the number of SDH equipments and their O&M terminals has been increasing every year, the need for centralized monitoring on SDH equipments came above the surface. By centralizing and replacing the existing O&M terminals by SMOT-IT, operators are able to access rich statistical data that can not be provided by individual terminals. Also, it enables more efficient use of space in transmission operator's room that has been excessively occupied by multiple terminals. SMOT-IT has provided the solutions to the problems of the existing terminals, and therefore to establish centralized monitoring and efficient managemetn on SDH equipments within a telephone office.
