Data processing has evolved over the past three plus decades. We now have several generations of practitioners working in the field of capacity planning. Unfortunately, the newer practitioners view the old guard as out-moded and archaic. They also seem to feel that the lessons that have been learned in the dark ages of mainframe-centric computing have little value in a new era of distributed data processing. This is unfortunate, since the basic rules and echniques remain as applicable today as they were in the past.
