This paper describes progress being made on the development of smal capacity (e.g.,10-100 tons) direct drive,oil-free coentrifugal compressors. The technology development requried fro successful application involves high speed motors and drives, centrifugal aerodynamics,oil-less bearings, controls, system mdoeling, and heat exchangers operating with environmentally safe HFC refrigerants.A Consortium has bene formed for the purpose of developing and demonstrating htis concept. This project, partially funded by NIST and NYSERDA,is in its third and final year,After successful ocmpletion in 1996 of individual ocmponent assessments and demonstrations and 1997 proof-of-cocept compressor testing at UTRC,another proof-of-concept prototype ocmpressor is now being tested in actual system applications in the Syracuse development laboratories of Carrier.
